EFFECTS THE LIVES OF MANY FAMILIES
WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?
Global warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's surface, oceans, and atmosphere, attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, and other pollutants.
WHEN DOES GLOBAL WARMING OCCUR?
Global warming occurs when human activity introduces too much of certain types of gas into the atmosphere. More of this gas equals more warming. The atmospheric gases primarily responsible for the greenhouse effect are known as "greenhouse gases". They include water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4). Hydrocarbon gases produced both through natural sources and human activities, include the decomposition of wastes in landfills, -agriculture, and especially rice cultivation, as well as digestion and manure management associated with domestic livestock. The most dominant greenhouse gas is CO2, Carbon dioxide.
According to EPA, in 2012, there is an unprecedented increase in CO2 in the atmosphere. CO2 accounted for about 82 percent of all United States greenhouse gas emissions (discharges). Carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbs infrared radiation heat and the global temperature increases. CO2 makes its way into earth’s atmosphere through a variety of routes. For example, burning fossil fuels, releases CO2. Fossil fuel is a general term for buried combustible deposits of organic materials, formed from decayed plants and animals that have been converted to crude oil, coal, natural gas, or heavy oils by exposure to heat and pressure in the earth's crust over hundreds of millions of years. Fossil fuels can be burned, producing significant amounts of energy.
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
Glacier melting: Montana's Glacier National Park, where about 150 glaciers were once located, only 25 glaciers remain, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Hurricanes: Hurricanes are more intense. They get their energy from the temperature difference between the warm tropical ocean and the cold upper atmosphere.
Rise in temperature: North America reached record highs in 2012, making it the hottest year since record keeping began in 1895. Atmosphere traps, traps heat radiating from Earth toward space.
